Lore & Background
Charlotte is a mage and a distant descendant of the Belnades clan. She acts as one of the two main protagonists in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, alongside Jonathan Morris. The game expands on the two-character gameplay found in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. Charlotte's magical abilities are required to solve puzzles and progress through the story. In Sisters Mode, an alternate single-player mode unlocked after obtaining the canonical ending, the player controls Loretta and Stella Lecarde rather than Charlotte.
In Their Own Story
At the beginning of the game, Charlotte encounters an enigmatic blue figure at the castle entrance who introduces himself as 'Wind'. Later, she and Jonathan find one of Brauner's magical portraits and travel into the world within. When they enter the second portrait, they find three vampires: Brauner and twin sisters Stella and Loretta. During exploration, Charlotte finds a photo of the twins with Wind inside Stella's locket, leading to the revelation that Wind is Eric Lecarde. After obtaining the Sanctuary spell, Charlotte cures the sisters of their vampirism during their battle. The twins subsequently perform a ritual allowing Jonathan to utilize the Vampire Killer whip's full power and grant access to a portrait leading to Brauner's studio. In the canonical ending, all vampire antagonists are defeated.
