Simon Belmont

A young hunter with a whip, a cross, and nothing to lose but a kingdom.

Simon Belmont is the founding hero of the Castlevania franchise and the young vampire hunter at the heart of the 1986 NES classic. A scion of the legendary Belmont bloodline, he steps into his father's mantle to storm Dracula's castle and end the Count's latest reign of terror over the European countryside. His whip-cracking, holy-water-slinging silhouette became the visual shorthand for the entire series and for gothic action-platformers as a genre.

Beyond the original two games, Simon carries enormous narrative weight: he is the father of Richter Belmont (the star of Symphony of the Night), a playable character in later titles, and the lead protagonist of the 2017–2021 Netflix animated series, where his story is told across three seasons with far greater emotional depth.

Lore & Background

The Belmont name has been synonymous with the hunt for Dracula for generations, and Simon is the heir who must answer the call in 1476. His father, Trevor Belmont, perished in a prior confrontation with the Count, leaving Simon to inherit both the family's sacred armaments and the crushing responsibility of protecting the castle and the people beyond its walls. Armed with the Vampire Slayer—a whip imbued with holy power—and a small arsenal of crosses, holy water, and daggers, Simon presses through the shifting, ever-growing corridors of Dracula's fortress, battling the undead legions that guard each wing.

In the sequel, Simon's Quest, the tone shifts from action to elegy. Simon travels across a ruined Europe in search of his father's remains, confronting the lingering corruption Dracula left in his wake. The game paints Simon less as a brawler and more as a grieving son walking a desolate, haunted landscape, a tone that the Netflix series later amplifies into a full character study.

In the animated adaptation, Simon is a broad-shouldered, hot-tempered young man who has already lost his father to Dracula and who must balance his duty as a hunter with his love for his wife Maria, a fellow vampire hunter, and his growing family. His arc across three seasons moves from reckless fury to hard-won wisdom, culminating in a final confrontation that demands he sacrifice everything he has built.

In Their Own Story

The torchlight gutters in the castle's lowest corridor. Simon presses his back against cold stone, the Vampire Slayer coiled across his forearm, its tip still smoking from the last strike. Somewhere above, the organ grinds out a dirge that makes the candles lean as if listening. He can feel the Count's presence in the marrow of the walls—a slow, patient pressure, like a hand closing around a throat. Simon spits blood from a split lip, plants his boots, and uncoils the whip with a crack that echoes off the vaulted ceiling. The shadows peel back. Two pairs of eyes open in the dark, and the hunt resumes. He has walked this castle before. He will walk it again. The Belmonts always do.

Reader's Guide

Simon Belmont is the original face of the Castlevania franchise: a young, fiercely loyal vampire hunter from the 15th century who inherits his father Trevor's sacred weapons and his enemy in the form of Count Dracula. His motivation is personal and protective—he fights not for glory but to shield the castle, the village beyond it, and the family he loves. In the Netflix series this is layered with his relationship to his wife Maria, a fellow hunter, and his role as a young father, which makes his rage feel grounded rather than cartoonish.

His signature toolkit is the Vampire Slayer whip, which he can extend, coil, and swing in arcs, supplemented by thrown crosses, holy water, and short blades. In the games his playstyle is fast, aggressive, and whip-centric; in the animated series his combat is more visceral and desperate, often at the cost of his own body.

Key relationships include his father Trevor (whose death drives him), his wife Maria, his son Richter (the protagonist of Symphony of the Night, set roughly a century later), and his nemesis Dracula, whose repeated resurrections define the Belmont family's endless vigil.

Simon appears in the original Castlevania (1986), Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (1988), Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness (2005, as a playable character), and serves as the lead of the Netflix animated series Castlevania (2017–2021).
